Help us finish our record, and get cool stuff!

Dear friends, fans and family,

Nine months ago, we started making a record. It was originally going to be a 6- or 7-song EP—a followup to our 2007 release “Selfish,” capturing the best material we’ve written since then. Once we got into the studio, though, one thing led to another and we wound up recording 11 songs. We can’t explain how, but these things happen. And let us tell you this: the thing sounds amazing. There’s bells, organs, vintage amps, synths, tambourines, timpani, banjos—all kinds of crazy stuff on it. We literally pulled out all the stops (on a Hammond B3 organ).

In any case, we’re done with the recording phase and are about to send off our tracks for mixing and mastering. Trouble is, making a record this way isn’t cheap! We need $5,830 to finish this beast. Hence, this letter.

Click here to chip in now!

As our fans, you have the opportunity to help us finish this record soon, and own a little piece of the process. Here’s what you get by donating to help us out:

$10 or more: early digital download of the record + inclusion in the “thanks” section of our liner notes
$25 or more: above + signed CD
$50 or more: above + Farewell Typewriter T-shirt
$100 or more: above + customized video thank-you note
$250 or more: above + recording of a song written just for you
$500 or more: above + Farewell Typewriter house concert (San Francisco Bay or Sacramento areas only)
$1,000 or more: above + “executive producer” credit + permanent guest list spot at all of our shows (whenever possible)
$5,830: above + a song on the record named after you + our eternal gratitude

We appreciate whatever you can give. This fundraising drive only lasts two weeks, so if you’re kind enough to donate, please do so by Aug. 4. Thanks for considering and we’ll see you soon.

Love and many thanks,
Grant, Steve, Jason & Audie

A special Farewell Typewriter show

Now that we're finished recording (!) our second record, the as-yet-untitled Farewell Typewriter LP 1, we are getting back into the swing of playing shows. This next one is a must-see: we're playing at Mission Coffees in Fremont, Calif., where Grant got his first summer job far too many years ago. The whole night is ours (no openers, closers), and we'll be playing special arrangements of our tunes. It'll be a mostly acoustic set with some special instrumentation.

We'll be playing tunes from the upcoming record, our first EP, "Selfish," in its entirety (provided we can remember how to play "Lost"), and a handful of covers. Jason and Grant will each do some special solo and duo performances, and the whole time we'll be wearing tuxedos. If we can find free tuxedos by then. Otherwise, just our PajamaJeans and muscle shirts.

Return to rocking

Hello. We are all done having babies for a while. Now, the only thing we will be birthing is a record, a bunch of shows, and new songs.

Our first show back will now be May 26 at The Uptown in Oakland, a place we love and adore. No cover, new tunes, good bar – let's do this.

By the way – did you know that we're on Twitter? Of course we are. Follow us: @faretype.

And if you're not on our mailing list already, sign up now. We email no more than twice a month (usually less) and it's the most reliable way to keep up to date on upcoming shows, album releases, etc.

Charles Shellen

We are proud to announce the arrival of our newest Farewell Typewriter family member. Charlie Shellen was born on March 29th at 11:44 AM. He weighed in at 9 lbs., 3 OZ. and was 20" tall. Grant and Heather are super excited to be parents. The rest of the band is really excited to have a new fan.

As you all know, Steve had his son 12 weeks ago, so with the arrival of Charlie, we now have 2 Farewell Typewriter kids. Feel free to harass Audie and Jason about when they will be joining the 'parenting while in a rock band' club.

Oh, for all you die hard fans, we will be back to playing live on May 7th @ The Rockit Room. After that, we are working a show at Bottom of the Hill. Then, if all goes well, keep and eye out for our CD release show in the next few months. The new album is sounding incredible!

Alright, here is some video footage from Grants last show before fatherhood!

See us play, help Haiti

We'll post some more details about both of our upcoming shows soon, but we wanted to let you know that if you come to see us play at Red Devil Lounge in San Francisco Feb. 12, 25 percent of the ticket price goes to Doctors Without Borders, who are helping Haitians who are obviously in need of serious medical care in the wake of the Jan. 12. earthquake.

Additionally, we'll be giving out free CDs with any donation made to DWB, and T-shirts for any donation over $15. We're a struggling band, but there are folks who need your money A LOT more than us.

More details about our February shows, as always, on our shows page.
